Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire 1919 states :-

"The church of All Saints is a small but ancient edifice of stone in the Early Norman, Early English and later styles, consisting of chancel with vestry, nave of three bays, aisles, transept, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 2 bells :

in the south wall of the chancel are double sedilia and & piscina in good preservation, and in the nave a handsome brass corona presented in 1871 by C. Pratt esq. mayor of Lincoln:

there is a curious black letter Bible and an oak church chest :

the walls of the chancel arch are of great thickness and are pierced by two hagioscopea, one of which on the south side affords a view of the altar from a low-side window in the west wall of the south aisle :

fixed in one of the pillars at the side of the pulpit an hour-glass stand, now fitted with a new sand-glass, and there is a good cylindrical Norman font :

in the south aisle is a restored altar-tomb of the 17th century, inscribed to Katherine, second daughter and co-heir of John Wilson esq. of Sheepwash, and wife of ___ Luddington esq. of Bracebridge:

there is a memorial window to Harriett Beevor, d. Jan. 26, 1883:

in 1888 two stained windows were placed in the north aisle by Mrs Eleanor Ewbank; and in 1903 a stained east window was presented by the Rev. C. C. Ellison, and a memorial window placed in the south aisle to the Rev. George Howell Jones, Vicar here 1897-1902:

in 1874-5 the church was restored and considerably enlarged, under the direction of Mr. J. L. Pearson R.A., F.S.A. when a new north aisle, shallow transept and a vestry were built, the walls of the south aisle rebuilt, the singular south doorway reset, and the whole structure new roofed:

in 1893 the tower was completely restored under the direction of Mr. Hodgson Fowler, architect, of Durham, and other alterations carried out :

a large number of fragments of coffin lids of the 13th century, found in the south wall, have been replaced, with their ornamental crosses facing outwards :

there are 230 sittings.

In 1910 a lych gate was erected to the memory of Elizabeth Ellison.

The living is a vicarage, net income £240, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Henry Richard Ellison B.A. and held since 1902 by the Rev. Ernest Stafford Smith M.A. of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge"

White's Directory of Lincolnshire 1856 (before some of the later Victorian alterations) states :-

"Bracebridge Church (All Saints) is a small ancient structure, consisting of a nave, chancel, south aisle, and tower, covered with flat tiles.

The vicarage, valued in K.B. at £3. 9s. 8d., and now at £203, is in the incumbency of the Rev. Wm. Bromehead, B.A., and in the patronage of Mrs. Bromehead.

The tithes were commuted in 1841 for £226 per annum"

"An accomplished rose grower. He laid out 4 acres of garden at Bracebridge with thousands of roses.

In 1905 He crossed a Cox's Orange Pippin to create Ellison's Orange"

http://www.itsaboutlincoln.co.uk/ellison.html

"Ellison's Orange is a connoisseur's mid-season eating apple, described as 'once tasted, never forgotten' on account of its rich flavour and unique aniseed undertones.

It's an Edwardian variety, dating back to 1904 when it was raised by Rev Charles Ellison of Bracebridge Manse, Lincoln and Mr Albert Wipf, head gardener to Rev Ellison's brother-in-law, Joseph Shuttleworth, at Hartsholme Hall in nearby Skellingthorpe.

Charles Ellison was a renowned pomologist with more than 1,500 fruit trees in his gardens ...

Ellison's Orange achieved an RHS Award of Merit in 1911 and RHS First Class Certificate in 1917"

"For most conspicuous bravery at Givenchy on the night of 25-26th May, 1915.

After the assault on the German position by the 24th Battalion, London Regt, efforts were made by that Unit to follow up their success by a bomb attack, during the progress of which 58 men out of a total 75 became casualties.

During this very fierce encounter Lance-Cpl Keyworth stood fully exposed for 2 hours on the top of the enemy's parapet, and threw about 150 bombs amongst the Germans, who were only a few yards away.

Ruddock's Directory of the City of Lincoln 1919 states :-

"ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH is a stone edifice of Gothic architecture. It has two aisles and a large chancel, designed by Mr. J. FOWLER, of Louth.

The chancel has been gorgeously decorated at the cost of the former owner of the site Rev. F. SWAN.

The foundation stone of the present church was laid by Bishop WORDSWORTH, on St. Andrew's Day, 1875. The site for the church was given by Prebendary SWAN and the Bishop contributed a large portion of the fabric of the original church of St. Martin, Lincoln, now to be seen in the arches of the south aisle.

The building was consecrated on 21 May, 1878. The organ was opened on 4 March, 1881.

For the first five years of its existence the church remained as a district church to St. Peter-at-Gowts, until the parish of St. Andrew was formed.

In 1890, a side chapel was added to the church in memory of Canon VERNON HUTTON, who spent the last years of his ministry in helping at St. Andrew's. This chapel was completed and decorated by the kindness of the Rev. P. R. LLOYD, and was dedicated on 14 July, I894. The oak screen at the entrance of the chapel is in the fifteenth century style of Gothic architecture, and was designed by Mr. W. D. PRATT, architect, Nottingham.

The living is a vicarage held since 1917 by the Rev. ROBERT WALKER WATT, M.A."

"St. Benedict's Church, Lincoln is an ancient church in Lincoln which is mentioned in 1107 and before the English Civil War was the Lincoln Civic Church.

It was extensively destroyed in the Civil War, and was only partially restored.

The tower was re-built imitating the other late Saxon towers in Lincoln.

All that survives is the present nave, which was the chancel of the former church' and the chapel to the north built by Robert Tattershall in 1378.

The church's bell known as Old Kate, was cast in 1585 and paid for by the Lincoln Barber's Surgeons Company.

The church was closed in 1931 and demolition was proposed. However, following a public outcry, the church was saved as the result of an appeal and renovation work undertaken"

"Possibly Nicholson's most important contribution was in the design of Workhouses.

His pioneering Southwell Workhouse (1824) was important forerunner of the radially planned workhouses of the New Poor Law ...

As well as working in the Gothic revival style of architecture, Nicholson could also work very effectively in classical styles.

He designed the Mansfield Town Hall in a Grecian style portico with Doric columns.

More striking is the Corn Exchange of 1847 in the Cornhill Lincoln. Here he has a projecting portico with Corinthian columns at Piano nobile level ... "

Kelly's Directory 1930 states :-

"St. Mary Magdalene's is a building of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of nave, north aisle and an embattled western tower containing 2 bells :

the original church was destroyed by Bishop Remigius to make room for the minster; a new church was erected about 1294, by Bishop Oliver Sutton, but this structure, ruined in the siege of 1643, was rebuilt in 1695 ;

in 1882, the church, with the exception of the four outer walls, was rebuilt from designs by G. F. Bodley esq. A.R.A., F.S.A. architect ; the cost, £3,501, being defrayed by voluntary contributions:

the two stained windows in the south side of the chancel were erected in 1911 to the memory of Thomas Martin esq. J.P. and two others in the north side in 1924 to Lt.-Col. E. Mansel Sympson M.D.:

Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire 1919 states

"St. Peter-at-Gowts is a building of stone, in the Pre-Norman, Earlier English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, chantry, nave, aisles and a western tower containing 6 bells:

it derives its distinctive name from the gowts or watercourses, of which several run in its immediate vicinity, and as now standing has been almost wholly restored; the tower and the south side of the church, a work of the Lancet period, represent the original structure:

a monumental arch, opening into the south transept or chantry, bears a singular rhyming inscription, in medieval Latin and in Lombardic characters, to the memory of Ralph Joluf and his wife, the founder of the chapel, which formerly contained an incised slab two crosses and bearing his name; it runs thus :-

"Radulfus Joluf, sua conjux ac Amicia,Hic Simul humatur, quibus ista capella paratur. Virgine Mater Theos qui sibi salvet eos Pro quibus oretis opus hoc quicunque videtis."

There are several stained windows in the church, and some excellent mural decorations :

there is also a finely carved stone reredos and a Norman font:

in 1852 the north aisle was built, in the Decorated style, and the church new roofed:

in 1887 the church was again restored and considerably enlarged, at a cost of £2,200, under the direction of the late Mr. Hodgson Fowler:

there are now 475 sittings"

"ST. PETER's at Gowts, is a small but neat stone fabric, comprising nave, with north and south aisles, a chancel with south chantry chapel, a vestry, and a square lofty western tower, through which is the principal entrance.

The church was enlarged by the addition of a north aisle and vestry, and re-pewed and restored in 1853, under the direction of Mr. Drury, at a cost of £1200.

It presents some features similar to those of St. Mary's, especially its tower, which, though less ancient, is a more interesting specimen of Norman architecture, and contains in its front elevation an ancient carved figure of St. Peter holding the keys.

In the south wall of the chancel is an ancient sepulchral arch, round which is an inscription recording its erection by Radulfus Joluf, a Lincoln merchant, who died in the year 1347" ...

"The building contains 350 sittings, a massive circular Norman stone font, is furnished with an organ, built by Nicholson, of Lincoln, and warmed with a hot water apparatus, supplied by Simpson.

The three small chancel windows are filled with stained glass.

The living is a vicarage, now valued at £110, and is in the gift of the Bishop, and incumbency of the Rev. Roderick B. Mackenzie, MA"

White's Directory 1872 states :-

"The new Church of ST. PETER-EASTGATE, the foundation stone of which was laid Sept. 29, 1869, by W. H. Smyth, Esq., the D.P.G.M. of the Freemasons of Lincolnshire, was consecrated on St. Peter's day, 1870, and serves as the parish church of the united parishes of St. Peter-in Eastgate and St. Margaret-in-the-Close, which have formed one consolidated benefice since 1778, when the church of the former was rebuilt, and that of the latter taken down.

It is a handsome stone edifice, in the Early Geometrical style of architecture, erected upon the site of the old church, from the designs of A. W. Blomfield, Esq., a son of the well-known Bishop of London of that name, at a cost of about £3000, contributed by the parishioners.

It comprises nave, north chancel, vestry, and south porch, and in the western end is a gable turret with one bell.

The arcade of four pointed arches separating the nave from the aisle, is supported by cylindrical pillars of stone plainly moulded; and in the chancel, the floor of which, consisting of encaustic tiles, is considerably higher than that of the nave, are two stone sedilia, whose spandrils are ornamented with finely carved diaper-pattern work.

The building, which is fitted up with good open benches accommodating 500 persons, is heated by means of a hot water apparatus, and provided with a finely toned organ, built by Nicholson.

A beautifully stained glass window has been placed in the chancel in memory of the late incumbent, the Rev. George Rigg, by his brother; and a memorial window in the nave to Miss Harriott S. Smyth, is similarly embellished.

The benefice is a vicarage, valued at £300 a year, in the gift of the Bishop, and incumbency of the Rev. James M. Barrett, M.A., prebendary of Welton Rivall, and Diocesan inspector of schools, for whom a good Vicarage House was built a short distance from the church in 1870, by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, at an expense of £1,400.

The Rev. Alfred Halford Adcock, B.A., is curate; Mr. W. Dixon, organist; and Mr. Sharp, clerk".

St Swithin's is one of the grandest of James Fowler's churches.  Work began with the nave and aisles in 1869, the tower being finally completed in 1887.

The building, which shows  Decorated and Early English styles, was largely funded by local industrialists Clayton and Shuttleworth and their families.
